A few years ago, I posted a piece of the entire Manhattan Clan on my old gallery as part of a series of group shots from Gargoyles. The reaction to that piece was very positive compared to the other stuff I've posted throughout the years. Soon, I kept seeing it all around the web, in Gargoyles related articles, tweets and what not.
And even though I wasn't credited, it was probably the greatest compliment I could ever receive. People actually thought it was official production artwork. Mind you, it's very understandable why some would make that mistake, seeing as I make an effort to always use official artwork when possible, but still, I'd like to think that hardcore fans would be able to tell the difference.
As I saw it more and more, all of its flaws became more and more apparent to me. Character proportions were all over the place, coloring was off model, and the background was too generic and didn't gel with the characters. Like many other artists, I was never satisfied with that one even after I was long done with it. Through the years I always planned to get back to that piece and maybe even expand upon it. After all, if you've read the SLG comics (the official continuation of the second season), you'd know that the clan has expanded and doubled in size.
Still, I could never bring myself to revisit that piece.
And then it was announced recently that Dynamite! will publish new Gargoyles comics written by series co-creator, Greg Weisman. The thought of new canon stories, along with the recent resurgence the series has been seeing with the latest (highly recommended) NECA toyline and other merchandise, has got the old juices flowing again.
So to celebrate the great news, I'm posting my new take on that original piece. I'm also currently at hard work on the expanded clan, so expect it to be posted at some point very soon.
